New Zealand to plant 1 billion trees
New Zealand to plant 1 billion trees to combat Climate Change.
Yes, thats 1 billion trees for a country with a population of 5 million. Well done New Zealand.
With the recent widespread fires across the world, and most notably in the Amazon rainforest, more than ever we need initiatives like this.
“Getting the ETS (emissions trading scheme) right could drive the planting of 340 million trees over the next 10 years – double the amount that would be planted if the ETS was left in its current state.
“This is one of the most important levers the Government has to incentivize the planting of trees to help reach our Billion Tree program’s goals.” says Shane Jones, Minister of Forestry
Its a great target for aim for, and much needed. You can track its progress here.
Would it work in Ireland?
We need to do this!
Ireland NEEDS to plant more trees. The Forestry Programme report says that the country’s tree-planting targets have all been missed for 2015, 2016, and 2017. The government offers farmers and landowners payment for allowing trees to be planted on their lands. We need to push this more. Do you agree?
